Lesson - 13 The Peacock!

THE PEACOCK

Q.1.  How does the poet first know of the peacock's presence by sound / sight ?

Ans:  The poet first knows the presence of the peacock by sound.

Q.2. Where did she see the bird first? Pick out two phrases that interest you in her description of that first glimpse of the bird?

Ans:  The poet first saw the bird when she was reading a book. 'A blue shadow will fall on you', 'The peacock turning away as he gathers his tail'.

Q.3.  When and why does the peacock choose draw nearer?

Ans:  The peacock would choose to draw near if one was to sit quietly.

Q.4.  How does the poet sense that he is near?

Ans:  The peacock's presence is sensed by the changes in the environment - A blue shadow would fall, the wind would change direction, the humming of bees would stop and the cat would awaken and stretch.

Q.5.  What happens when the peacock gathers his tail? Think about the meaning of last 2 lines in the poem.

Ans:  When a peacock gathers it's tail, he is ready to leave. The last two lines memorably capture the stunning beauty of the peacock's tail, with it's vivid eye imprints on each of the feathers. The poet imagines that the gorgeous tail of the bird like eyelids that open and shut the glwing beautiful eyes within it.
