Lesson - 10 Advia!

Q.1.  Why were the narrator and her family in Afghanistan? How long had they been there?

Ans:  The narrator and her family had come to spend their holidays in the small town of Kunduz in Afghanistan, where the narrator's father had been employed as an engineer at the Khanaba Irrigation Project for the last four months.

Q.2.  Which place had they come to visit? Why was the narrator feeling uneasy?

Ans:  They had visited the historical place of Bal and were returning by car. The narrator began to feel uneasy because of the dust, heat and the lonely, barren, rocky landscape.

Q.3.  Whom did they see rushing towards the car? What were they saying?

Ans:  They saw two Afghan men dressed in turbans and ankle-length black coats, rushing towards the car, one of them was waving a stick above his head and shouting, "Advia! Advia!"

Q.4. Describe the reactions of each member of the narrator's family. Did they all react in the same way?

Ans: No, they didn't react in the same way. When she saw the two men rushing towards their car, the narrator's mother drew away from the window and tried to get the narrator's father's attention quietly and discreetly. The narrator panicked, called out loudly for help and also tried to fling herself across her brother in an attempt to leave the car from the opposite side. Thhe narrator's brother banged the door, shut and shouted out to their father that dacoits were coming and that they had to start the car at once and then urged the narrator and her mother to wind up the window glass fast.

Q.5. What discovery did the narrator's father make when they went back home?

Ans:  On the narrator's request, her father checked the dictionary for the meaning of the word 'Advia' and found out that it meant 'medicine'.
