Lesson - 11 Stopping By The Woods ......

STOPPING BY THE WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING

Q.1.  Where did the speaker stop on his journey?

Ans:  The narrator stopped his journey in the middle of a dark, deep wood on a snowy evening.

Q.2.  Why does his little horse 'gives his harness bells a shake' ?

Ans:  The narrator's horse 'gives his harness bells a shake' as if to ask the speaker if there has been a mistake for having stopped on the middle of the woods with no farmhouse nearby.

Q.3.  What reasons does the speaker give for not stopping by the woods?

Ans:  Though the woods are lovely, dark and deep, the speaker has promises to keep and therefore he can't stop for long by the woods.

Q.4.  What were the speaker's thoughts when he stopped by the woods at 'the darkest evening' of the year?

Ans:  The speaker's thoughts are full of conflicts of the wish to stay on in the lovely woods and recognition of the 'promises' to be kept outside it.

Q.5.  Repetition is a literary technique in which a word, phrase or line is repeated for emphasis. What does the repetition in the final lines suggest about the speaker's attitude towards the journey?

Ans:  The repetition of the final lines could be an implication of the long distance that lies ahead of him as well as the reflection of an anxiety not knowing what lies ahead of him.
