Unit - 4
Personal passive means that the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. Every verb that needs an object, can form a personal passive.
Example: He plays the guitar.
Personal Passive: The guitar is played by him.
Exercise:
(I) He opens the door.
The door is opened by him.
The door is opened by him.
(ii) We set the table.
The table is set by us.
(iii) She pays a lot of money.
(iii) She pays a lot of money.
Lots of money is paid by her.
(iv) I draw a picture.
(iv) I draw a picture.
A picture is drawn by me.
(v) They wear blue shoes.
(v) They wear blue shoes.
Blue shoes are worn by them.
Impersonal Passive is possible only with verbs of perception like know, think, etc.
Example: They say that Delhi is congested than Chennai.
Impersonal Passive: It is said that Delhi is congested than Chennai.
1. Women live longer than men.
Personal Passive. Women are said to live longer than men.
Impersonal Passive: It is believed that women live longer than men.
I also saw that the Impersonal Passive looks like a newspaper report, where names are not mentioned (except for opinions) only the fact is given.
A man was severely injured while driving his car using the cell phone is changed to "It is reported that an accident took place while talking on a cell phone during driving.
A man was hit by a train.
It is said that the ............ train killed a person on the spot. Like this and so on.
As of now, I learnt only this much, if my bulb burns brighter in the coming days, I'll share my insights on this subject with you. ;-)
